Frank Herring& Sons

An art shop in the same family since 1930: the third generation of Herrings now runs the double-fronted premises on High West Street, selling artists' materials and hanging a small gallery — with a department the big chains would never dream of, devoted to spinning and weaving. The firm designed its own British-made spinning wheel, the Herring, in 1983, and still supplies the craft nearly a century into the business. Open six days; closed Sundays.
