Shapinsay's Heritage Centre stands in the island village, twenty minutes by ferry from the centre of Kirkwall. Reopened with a fresh look in 2023, it covers the story of Shapinsay people and place through interactive displays, including a film on local boatbuilder John Robert Leslie and his traditional wooden boats; for 2026 the exhibit turns to another boatbuilder, Ivan Hourston. Open Wednesday to Sunday through the summer season, closed in winter.
