Stromness Books & Prints opened in 1970 as a second-hand bookshop run by Charles Senior, passing afterwards to John Broom and then Tam MacPhail, who took on Sheena Winter as an assistant in 1998. Winter took over the business herself in 2014, and locals still often call the shop simply 'Tam's' after her predecessor, who continued to appear behind the counter until his death in 2020. The shop recently moved across the street to new premises on Victoria Street, and is known, only half-jokingly, as Scotland's only drive-in bookshop. It stocks new and second-hand titles side by side and hosts author events, including a signing by the writer Cal Flyn, who once worked at the shop and wrote for its blog before her own book was published.
