St Mary's Books has traded in Stamford since 1971, moving to its present home at 9 St Mary's Hill, below the tower of St Mary's church, in 1987. It is an antiquarian and secondhand bookshop dealing in rare and first editions, illustrated and children's books, maps and prints. Particular strengths include a long run of Wisden Cricketers' Almanacks and a collection of Arthur Rackham and other illustrators, alongside natural history, aviation, military history and cookery. The shop also carries decorative prints, the occasional piece of taxidermy, and signed and collectable modern first editions. It occupies a period building on the hill running down towards the town bridge, and opens seven days a week, Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm and Sunday from 9am to 5pm. Stock changes constantly as private collections are bought in and catalogued.
