Cartmel Cheeses

Founded in 2010 by the cheesemaker Martin Gott and Ian Robinson, and run today by Ian and his daughter Steph, Cartmel Cheeses works the honourable end of the trade — the shop was named the industry's Maker Support Champion at the 2023 Speciality Food awards, a prize given for how a retailer treats the farms it buys from rather than how it decorates the counter. The shop holds two units of Unsworth's Yard, the maker's courtyard behind the village square, and runs a pizza oven on weekend evenings through the season, because a cheesemonger with an oven was never going to leave it cold.
