Opened to the public in 1987 on Hundland Road at Birsay, this is the last un-restored traditional 'Firehoose' in Northern Europe. The oldest part dates to 1595 and has no chimney, only an offset hole in the roof above the central peat hearth, plus a stone neuk bed. A c.1723 extension holds the Hay family's bedrooms and parlour with original wallpaper and a marriage lintel. Victorian gardens, a putting green and the Trowie Trail lie outside. Free entry, £5 donation suggested.
