Surveyed
Brothers Peter and David Unsworth turned a corner of their family's yard — held since 1922, garage and haulage before beer — into a five-barrel brewery in 2011, with the first brews flowing early in 2012, in a courtyard that looks across at Cartmel Priory and now houses the village's makers. The beer travels no further than it has to: the cheesemonger two doors down, the village's bars, and the tasting bench in the brewery itself, with Simon Rogan's kitchens among the local accounts. A village of a few hundred people supporting its own brewery is the Cartmel economy in miniature: small, dense and better than it needs to be.
