The Theatre in Chipping Norton occupies a Salvation Army Citadel built in 1888, later used as a furniture warehouse before the actors Tamara and John Malcolm rescued the building in 1968 and began raising funds for its conversion. It opened as a theatre in 1975 and was refurbished with Arts Council support in 1996. Today the charity runs a 214-seat auditorium that doubles as an arthouse cinema, alongside a gallery, a bar and a further room used for meetings and workshops. Live theatre, touring productions, concerts and film screenings share the programme with youth theatre for ages five to eighteen and creative sessions for adults. More than 55,000 visitors pass through the doors each year. The building sits at the junction of Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire, on Spring Street in the centre of town.
