Pure Vinyl opened in Brixton's Reliance Arcade in 2015, founded by Claudia Wilson, a DJ who grew up in Brixton and had played records at Mango Landin' before opening her own shop. The store moved to its current spot in The Department Store on Ferndale Road in September 2017, giving it more floor space for the soul, funk and reggae stock Wilson built the business around, alongside jazz, hip hop, classic rock and soca. Wilson describes the shop as a meeting place as much as a retailer, where musicians run into each other and younger customers get their first turn at a turntable. The shop hosts open-decks nights for local DJs.
