Alastair Scrivener opened this second-hand bookshop on Buxton's High Street in 1997, inside a Victorian building that still has its original range and sink in the cellar. The stock has grown to roughly forty thousand books spread across five floors, alongside maps, prints, sheet music and greetings cards. Alongside bookselling, the shop runs its own bindery, taking in new binding work, repairs and restoration for customers who bring in damaged or loose volumes. The old basement kitchen has been kept largely as found and set up as a small display for browsers to look through on their way to the cellar shelves. A café on site serves tea and coffee, giving visitors somewhere to sit with a stack of books before deciding what to buy. The shop is open seven days a week, with shorter hours on Sundays.
