Swaffham Museum tells the social history of the town and surrounding villages from the Stone Age to the present, housed on three levels of a Georgian building on London Street that once served as the town hall. Run entirely by volunteers and funded through entry fees and donations, it holds four galleries covering local archaeology and figures connected to the town, including Egyptologist Howard Carter, Victoria Cross recipient Admiral Sir Knyvet Wilson, prize fighter Jem Mace, Biggles author W.E. Johns, and the legendary Pedlar of Swaffham. Exhibits include Egyptian artefacts on loan from the British Museum linked to Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. The museum keeps standard weekday and Saturday morning hours, with a winter closure from before Christmas until mid-February. Ground-floor access is available, though upper galleries involve stairs.
