Jason and Nicky Crown left their day jobs in December 2017 to found WhataHoot, hand-distilling gin and vodka from a restored 16th-century warehouse just off King Street in King's Lynn, keeping the building's original beams and exposed brickwork. Their Signature Dry Gin uses Norfolk samphire and lavender, and the range extends to a Tawny Orange Gin, a Navy Strength Gin and a Signature V vodka, with a rum added more recently. The couple named the company after the local barn owls they had watched for years. WhataHoot won the King's Lynn Mayor's Business Award for Innovation in 2020 and Muddy Stilettos' Best Newcomer award in 2019. The ground-floor Pantry sells bottles daily, and the upstairs Gin School runs tasting masterclasses.
