Mitch Tonks and Mat Prowse opened the Seahorse on the South Embankment in 2008 and still run it: Brixham-landed fish cooked over charcoal in a room that looks across the Dart, Italian in its instincts, with a roof terrace above. The Observer named it restaurant of the year in 2012, the Good Food Guide its seafood restaurant of the year in 2013, and the National Restaurant Awards placed it 28th in the country in 2023. Tonks and Prowse also built Rockfish, the seafood chain that grew from the same harbour — the Seahorse stands apart from it, a single room under its own company, and cooks like it.
