The county jail of 1779 — Grade II listed, holding what is claimed as the country's only working execution pit — was restored at a reported cost running to tens of millions and reopened in October 2020 with the Dark Walk, a deliberately theatrical, immersive run through Cornwall's grimmer history, alongside guided historic tours by day and paranormal nights for the committed. The cell blocks became a seventy-room hotel in 2021, three cells to a room. The whole site is privately owned rather than run by any national body, and the events calendar — a LEGO history of Britain exhibition takes summer 2026 — turns over year-round. Book ahead; walk-up tickets cost more.
