Forsyths of Peebles began in 1938 when Walter Thomas Shaw Forsyth arrived from Duns to take over a butcher's shop on Eastgate that dated to the early 1900s. Deliveries once went out by pony and trap; the first van was bought in 1954. His sons Jim and Malcolm expanded into bacon curing, poultry, and cooked meats, and in 1982 the family opened a bakery next door making bread, rolls, and pastries by hand. The business is now run by the third generation, Walter, Callum, and Norman Forsyth, alongside their cousin Michael. Scottish beef, lamb, and pork sit beside daily bakes on the Eastgate counter, and the shop still delivers to homes around Peebles as it always has.
