Hildreth's occupies a site on Wycombe Road in Prestwood that the Hildreth family has traded from for roughly 500 years, beginning as a blacksmith's forge run by Harry and Edgar Hildreth in the early 1900s. Ted Hildreth built the current 1930s building on the site of the old forge, and the hardware shop opened in 1958. Richard Hildreth added the large greenhouse that still holds the plant stock in the 1980s, and the tea room followed in the late 1990s. Today the centre is run by Richard's son Dan alongside general manager Martin, selling plants, shrubs, trees and garden furniture, plus a hardware department with key-cutting, a pet shop and a cook-and-gift shop. The tea room serves breakfast, lunch and cake, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. It remains a single-site, family-owned business rather than part of a garden centre group.
