Cate Olson and Nash Robbins ran a bookshop in Marblehead, Massachusetts for twenty years, then crossed the Atlantic and did it again in Alfriston — a former builders' yard rebuilt as two floors of new and old books, with a shepherd's hut, a separate cabin devoted to arts and letters, and a henhouse, because a bookshop this considered was never going to skip the hens. The trade named it Independent Bookshop of the Year in 2007, and The Times listed it among Britain's best browsable bookshops as recently as January 2024. Alfriston is a village of pilgrimage churches and smugglers' inns; the bookshop holds its own in that company.
