The Newport Collective Gallery occupies a former cottage on East Street in Newport, showing work from more than twenty local artists and makers across two floors. Unlike a conventional gallery with outside management, it is run cooperatively by the makers themselves, who take turns staffing the till and arranging the changing displays of their own work. Mediums on show include oil and watercolour paintings, printmaking, thrown pottery, photography, beaded and silver jewellery, handwoven textiles, hand-knitted wool, and small wooden furniture and boxes made by members. Because stock is put out directly by the makers rather than bought in wholesale, the range on the shelves shifts as individual contributors bring in new work or step back from the group. The gallery opens through the main tourist season and trades from this single East Street building only, distinct from other commercial galleries in the village that operate as conventional owner-run shops rather than artist cooperatives.
