Parkway Cinema occupies 62-68 Eldon Street in Barnsley town centre, a site that has shown films for more than a century. A cinema first opened here as the Empire in 1908, was rebuilt as the Gaumont after a 1954 fire, renamed the Odeon in 1962, and closed in 2005 before reopening as the independent Parkway on 8 August 2007. Managing director Rob Younger leads the business, and in 2022 two families who run the cinema bought the building outright to keep it in independent hands after it was put up for sale. Parkway is one of the few cinemas in the country still able to project 35mm and 70mm film prints alongside digital showings, and its two screens are also used for live theatre, comedy and music. It is Barnsley's only cinema. The venue takes voluntary donations from customers to help cover running costs, on top of standard ticket and concession sales.
