The Plaza Theatre on Winchester Road in Romsey opened on 14 December 1931 as the Plaza Cinema De Luxe, an Art Deco building designed by the architect Robin Thomas. It closed as a cinema in 1975, spent a few years as a bingo club, and was bought in 1982 by the Romsey Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society, which reopened it as a theatre with an Old Time Music Hall show that November. The building retains its original 231-seat main auditorium alongside a smaller 45-seat studio space added later. The society still owns and runs the theatre, programming pantomime, musicals, drama, dance and touring tribute acts through the year, staffed largely by volunteers alongside a small paid team.
