Rebecca Killen and Laureanne Kootstra, both ceramicists, run The Clay Project from a room on Newcastle's Central Promenade with the sea in the window. It works two ways at once: a pottery-painting café anyone can walk in and use, and a working studio where the pair throw and hand-build porcelain in-house and teach it — mug-making, pressed-porcelain botanicals, seasonal workshops through the year. Making their own porcelain on site, and sourcing what they can locally, is the point rather than a line of copy. A craft studio you can visit, in a town better known for its mountains and its strand.
