The Sun Inn occupies a 1600s building on Market Street in Kirkby Lonsdale, its jettied upper floor carried on limestone pillars, a feature noted in its Historic England listing. Iain and Jenny Black took over the inn in 2017, running it as an independent free house with a bar, restaurant and bedrooms. Oak beams, wooden floors and open fires furnish the bar, where cask ales from breweries in Cumbria, Yorkshire and Lancashire are served alongside a seasonal menu built on Cumbrian meat, game and fish. The dining room holds chairs salvaged from the 1906 ocean liner Mauretania. The inn takes its name from a sundial in the churchyard next door and draws a mix of locals, Dales Way walkers and weekend visitors to the market town.
