Paul Thompson set up Tynemouth Coffee Company in 2009, roasting on the North Shields coast after years already spent in the coffee trade. The original roastery on Prudhoe Street Back still turns out daily batches, supplying several hundred wholesale accounts and home brewers across the country. A newer site at The Exchange 1856 on Howard Street puts the roasting drum behind glass, with guided tastings and short courses for anyone curious about cupping or extraction. The range runs from steady house blends built for cafés to single-origin micro-lots sold by the bag, each one dated rather than stamped with a vague best-before. Staff will talk through grind size and brew ratios if asked. It remains a working roastery first, retail counter second.
