Nick Pygott opened Vinylstore Jr on Castle Street in October 2016, having wanted to run a record shop since he was a boy cycling to Epsom, Leatherhead and Dorking because his own village had none. He had previously sold wine to musicians, including customers such as David Gray, Morcheeba and Turin Brakes, before taking voluntary redundancy and deciding the timing was right as vinyl sales were picking up again. The shop's stock is roughly ninety-nine per cent vinyl, split between new indie, classic rock and jazz releases and a rotating secondhand selection. The name is a mild pun on the band Dinosaur Jr. Pygott has hosted in-store performances, including one by the band Slaves, now known as Soft Play, to a room of around fifty people. He still runs the shop day to day, helped by a small part-time team.
