William Peat Butchers occupies a shop on Horsemarket in Barnard Castle that traces its trading name back around a century, a heritage the Higginson family chose to preserve when they bought the business in 1992. Jim Higginson had started what became Castle Bank Butchers in Tow Law in 1978, later adding shops in Stanhope and Crook before acquiring the Barnard Castle premises and Marden Farm Shop. The Barnard Castle counter sells beef, lamb, pork and poultry sourced from farms across Teesdale, alongside bacon and gammon cured on site, own-made pies, sausages and a small deli selection of local cheese and charcuterie. Jim's son David now runs the wider business day to day, keeping the William Peat name above the door rather than rebranding a shop the town already knew.
