The Bowes Museum is a purpose-built gallery on the edge of Barnard Castle, designed by Jules Pellechet and John Edward Watson in the style of a French chateau. It opened in 1892 to house the collection assembled by John and Josephine Bowes, and holds around 58,000 objects including paintings by El Greco, Goya and Canaletto alongside decorative art and costume collections. It operates as an independent charitable trust.
