Ballards Butchers trades from 152 King Street in Castle Douglas, in the town promoted as Scotland's Food Town. Proprietor Jimmy Craig runs the farmer-butcher shop, sourcing beef, lamb and pork from his own farm at Twynholm along with a small number of other local farms. The counter carries chicken, game, bacon, sausages, burgers, pies, haggis and black pudding, most made on the premises. The shop holds the current Scottish Craft Butchers title for Scotch Pork Sausage and the South West Scotland title for haggis, entered against other independent butchers from the region. Trade runs Monday to Saturday, closing at 4pm, with Sunday shut. Customers can order ahead for roasting joints and barbecue packs, and the shop supplies several local cafes and hotels with cuts direct from the farm. It remains a single-site, family-operated butcher rather than part of any wider group, standing alongside Castle Douglas's other independent food producers on King Street.
