Corner Bakery

Mr and Mrs Turkington opened the Corner Cake Shop in Cookstown in January 1951, renting their first small unit with three months' free rent from family to get started. Ownership passed to their daughter Ruth and her husband Geordie Anderson, then to Ruth's son Timothy and his wife Sharon, before Martin Booth took over the bakery in 2021. The shop kept the Corner name even after an early move one door along Oldtown Street, and still bakes more than two hundred lines from scratch each day, from oven and yeast breads to traybakes, hotplate items and pastries, without preservatives or additives. Custom occasion cakes are ordered through a dedicated in-house cake service rather than a chain supplier. Corner Bakery trades from this single Cookstown shop only. It opens Monday to Saturday, 8am to 4.30pm, and closes on Sundays.
