Designs Gallery & Café opened its doors on King Street in Castle Douglas in 1995 and still runs as a combined shop, gallery and café under one roof. The kitchen serves scones, cakes and lunches Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, with indoor and garden seating. The gallery side sells paintings and craft work by named artists including Linda McDonald, Shimara Carlow and Hannah McAndrew, alongside textiles, ceramics and books stocked through a partnership with Bookshop.org. Castle Douglas markets itself as Scotland's Food Town, and Designs is one of the longer-running businesses associated with that identity, pairing food service with a working retail gallery rather than operating as a café alone.
