Hive Mind Mead began in 2018 as Wye Valley Meadery, started by brothers Matt and Kit Newell, and now works from a unit on Castle Way in Portskewett, on the edge of Caldicot. The pair keep more than 180 hives across the lower Wye Valley and turn that honey into sparkling and wine-style meads, made from British honey rather than a wine base. Production sits alongside a taproom that opened in 2019, where visitors taste the range in the place it is made, with pizza and music nights held on the last Saturday of most months. Brewery tours and a bottle shop run on weekdays by arrangement. Their meads have taken several Great Taste awards, including the Golden Fork for Wales in 2023, and appear on the lists of two Michelin-starred restaurants. Pre-booking is advised for tours and tastings.
