Novel began in 2022 as a market stall run by Kate and Joe, selling books at events and markets around Sheffield before settling into a small unit inside the Queen of the Suburbs coffee shop in Crookes. When that cafe closed, the pair moved seven doors along School Road to their own permanent shop at number 221, keeping the same close relationship with baked goods from I Said Bread, whose pastries and bread now fill the cafe corner at the back of the shop. The stock favours contemporary fiction and non-fiction chosen by Kate and Joe themselves rather than a general trade list, and a monthly book club gives the shop's regulars a reason to come back beyond browsing.
