Alex Maxwell founded La Biblioteka in 2016, when Sheffield had little of the independent magazine culture common in bigger cities, building a following through pop-up stalls and events before settling into a series of temporary units around town. In 2024 the shop moved into Leah's Yard, an early nineteenth-century former workshop building on Cambridge Street that had spent years on the Heritage at Risk register before its recent restoration. Stock runs from literary fiction and essays to nature writing, design, fashion, sport and children's titles, with a strong sideline in independent magazines and journals that larger shops tend to overlook. It shares the courtyard with other small operators, including a florist and a farm shop, giving the yard the feel of a working arcade rather than a single retail unit.
