Patrick Morton founded Abbeydale Brewery in 1996 with his father Hugh, building a business now brewing more than 220 barrels a week across roughly fifteen beers at any one time. Moonshine, a 4.3% pale ale, remains the flagship alongside Deception, a New Zealand-hopped pale ale. In October 2024 the Mortons handed the business to its staff, making Abbeydale the first wholly employee-owned brewery in the UK, trading as part of Sheffield Beerworks. The brewery's archway logo nods to Beauchief Abbey, the ruined medieval site that gives the surrounding valley its name, and the Morton family's own roots run deep in Sheffield's cutlery trade. A tap room opened a short walk from the brewery in 2026. The business has raised over fifteen thousand pounds for local causes since 2010, currently supporting the charity Friends of the Porter Valley.
