Mitchells Wine Merchants occupies a shop on Meadowhead that has been in the same family's hands since 1935, when Dennis Mitchell opened it as a butchers on the parade of new shops built for the growing south Sheffield suburb. The premises became an off-licence in 1961 after the family moved out of the flat above, and John Mitchell, joining in 1968, built up the drinks side of the business. It is now run day to day by John and his daughter Frankie, the third generation to take charge. The shop carries several hundred wines alongside a whisky department of some 500 varieties and a small selection of hand-rolled cigars. A microbrewery was added next door in 2016, brewing under the Mitchells name. The business remains a single independent shop rather than part of a wider retail group.
