The Orange Bird sits on Middlewood Road in Hillsborough, opened by Anne Horner and Matthew Duggan-Jones, who both trained at the Sheffield café Marmadukes before starting the restaurant together. Matthew grew up in South Africa and cooks over a braai, the wood-fired grill at the centre of the country's food culture, producing dishes such as venison boerewors, peri-peri chicken and pork neck skewers. Puddings include a peppermint crisp tart and a miso malva pudding served with stout ice cream, and the wine list runs to South African labels at fair prices. The room is small and dark-fronted, easy to miss from the street, with a mixed crowd of regulars and diners booking well ahead. It featured in the Good Food Guide's 100 Best Local Restaurants list for 2023, 2024 and 2026.
