Poole's Cavern is a natural limestone show cave on the edge of Buxton, set within Buxton Country Park. First opened to visitors in 1853 by the 6th Duke of Devonshire, the cave closed in 1965 and reopened in 1976 under the Buxton Civic Association, the charitable trust that still runs it today. Guided 45-minute tours lead visitors through chambers of stalactites and stalagmites formed over roughly two million years, with a self-guided audio tour also available. The site includes woodland walking trails, a viewing tower on Grin Low, and an on-site cafe. Tours run daily year-round, with the cave holding a constant temperature of around 7 degrees Celsius. As a long-running attraction managed by a local charitable trust rather than a commercial operator, Poole's Cavern is one of the Peak District's established show caves, with recorded visits dating back to the seventeenth century.
