The Cube Microplex is a not-for-profit worker's cooperative cinema and performance venue entered from Dove Street South off King Square in Kingsdown, with a postal address on Princess Row. Four artists founded it in 1998, and it has been run since by unpaid volunteers who cover every job needed to open seven days a week, taking no external funding. The building has held a glass recycling depot, an amateur dramatics theatre, a 1970s gay avant-garde art centre and a deaf institute among earlier uses; the dramatics group hand-built the wood-panelled walls and raked seating still in use. A kitchen fire closed the venue for a year in 2001; it reopened with a new entrance and garden. The bar makes its own cola and serves fair-trade coffee sourced from Central America, and asylum seekers are admitted free.
