Mark and Bronwen Robson, a father-and-daughter team, opened The Just Reproach on King Street in December 2011, keeping it a genuine free house with no tie to any brewery. Four cask ales are on at any time, rising to five on Fridays, alongside real ciders and a rotating list of Kent-brewed beers. There is no music, no fruit machines and no televisions, and a house rule fines anyone caught using a mobile phone, with the money going to local charities that have received more than twenty thousand pounds over the pub's history. The Deal, Dover and Sandwich CAMRA branch named it Pub of the Year, recognition that reflects its standing among regulars who treat it as a place for conversation over spectacle.
