The New Union occupies a Stricklandgate building that began as a spinning house around 1800 and became a tavern by 1834, making it one of Kendal's oldest coaching inns. It closed twice in the 2010s before Phil Walker took it over in 2017 and reopened it as a free house with a deliberately stripped-back offer: four changing cask ales, three craft kegs and three ciders, sourced from Cumbrian and national breweries rather than tied to any one. Food is kept to Sunday roasts and a Thursday delivery slot rather than a full kitchen. A Wednesday quiz and Thursday jam night bring in regulars, and the pub has been named Westmorland's cider pub of the year more than once.
