Brewing has continued on this Salop Street site since 1642, making it, by trade reckoning, the oldest licensed brewery site in Britain; the present Victorian tower brewhouse, a Grade II listed building the brewery still uses as its fermenting room, was built around 1888 under the Roberts family's ownership. A protest against turning the site into holiday homes brought new owners in 2003, and the brewery is now run by the Russell family under John Roberts Brewing Co Ltd, with gravity still doing the work of moving beer between the tower's floors. A house yeast strain dating to the Victorian rebuild gives the beer its character. Cask, bottled and canned beer goes out from the site, with an online shop serving the rest of the country.
