Herbie has been the deli on Raeburn Place in Stockbridge since 1976 — a long-running neighbourhood fixture now run by Tannis Dodd and Andrew Firth, who chooses the cheese and charcuterie himself and makes the shop's well-known chicken liver pâté to its own recipe. It is a proper deli of the old sort: a good counter, sandwiches and lunch to take away, and the kind of standing in its neighbourhood that only comes from decades of getting it right. Stockbridge is Edinburgh's most village-like quarter, and Herbie is one of the shops that makes it so. Go in hungry.
