Makers occupies a shopfront on Colston Street in the Christmas Steps Arts Quarter, where fifteenth-century buildings house a run of small independent galleries and workshops. Joanna Boyd and Sarah Salaman curate the gallery's stock from around seventy artists, designers and makers based mostly in and around Bristol, mixing original paintings and prints with studio ceramics, jewellery and textiles. Nothing on the shelves is mass produced, and the mix changes as makers rotate in and out, so a repeat visit rarely shows the same room twice. Handmade greetings cards and small homeware pieces sit at the affordable end, while limited edition prints and larger ceramics carry the higher price points. The gallery opens Tuesday to Saturday and keeps to daytime hours, closing on Sundays and Mondays.
