The Malago opened on North Street in May 2017, run by siblings Helly (chef) and John (front of house) in a unit that had most recently traded as Zazu's Kitchen. It had long been an ambition of the pair to open a family-run neighbourhood restaurant and bar together, and the result serves an evolving seasonal menu alongside a full bar list, with brunch service at weekends. The kitchen changes its dishes according to what is available from South West suppliers, and the dining room keeps a dog-friendly policy. Open Wednesday to Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday, it has built a following among Bedminster residents as a local rather than a destination restaurant, with weekend mornings given over to brunch and the evening kitchen running later on Fridays and Saturdays. The name refers to the River Malago, which runs close by through Bedminster and Southville.
