Plastic Wax Records has traded from the same stretch of Cheltenham Road since 1978, making it Bristol's longest-running independent record shop. Dave Kellard now owns the business, running a stock of around twelve thousand albums, singles, CDs and cassettes organised alphabetically by artist rather than by genre, on the basis, as the shop puts it, that it tries "to cater for almost everybody." Prices start at a pound, and the shop still buys collections over the counter from customers looking to sell, rather than relying only on what wholesalers supply. A strong Bristol section covers local labels and artists going back through the city's trip hop years, reflecting a stretch of Cheltenham Road that has always had more record shops than most parts of the city.
