The UK's first dedicated media centre, opened on the harbourside in June 1982 and run ever since by the Watershed Arts Trust — an independent charity, not the council — on a mixture of its own trading income and arts funding, most recently a three-year BFI National Lottery award running to 2029. Three cinema screens keep a programme that trusts its audience, the Pervasive Media Studio upstairs houses artists and technologists in residence, and the café-bar over the water supplies the connective tissue. Cinema Rediscovered, its festival of restorations, takes over late July.
