Portland Wine Cellars has traded from the corner of Portland Street and Sefton Street in Southport since 1908, and has held a spirits licence since 1913, among the first batch issued in the country. Dave Smith and his wife Chris took over the shop in 1985 and ran it for four decades before passing the business to Phil Barber, who started there as an apprentice in 2015 and worked full-time from 2016. Smith remains on site as a consultant while Barber takes on ownership. The shop holds around five hundred wines and a hundred spirits, describing itself as the last independent wine and spirits merchant in Southport. Customers get ten per cent off any six bottles, and the business has recently launched same-day local delivery across the PR8 and PR9 postcodes. It does not sell cigarettes or vapes.
