Savoy Café occupies 22-24 Main Street in Newcastle, revived by owners Paddy and Eileen Mallon on the same stretch where a café of the same name traded more than eighty years earlier. Paddy, a former head chef, and Eileen run the kitchen and front of house together, working to a stated principle of good food rather than fast food. Scones and traybakes are baked in-house each morning, soups change with the seasons, and the all-day breakfast uses locally sourced bacon and eggs. Trained baristas work the coffee machine, and the menu runs to toasted sandwiches and daily specials chalked up on a board. The café sits within sight of the Mourne Mountains and Newcastle's promenade, drawing a mix of regulars and passing walkers off the Mourne Way.
