The Peppermill

The Peppermill occupies a pair of 15th-century townhouses on St John's Street in Devizes, one dating from around 1451, that spent centuries as a coaching inn before Philip and Amanda O'Shea opened it as a town house hotel, restaurant and wine bar in 2012. The couple began with seven rooms above the restaurant, then bought the derelict building next door in 2019 and spent the 2020 lockdown year refurbishing it, bringing the total to sixteen individually decorated rooms, including a four-poster bridal suite and a two-bedroom family suite. The restaurant held two AA rosettes as of 2015, and the accommodation has carried the AA's five gold stars for nine consecutive years. The building's long run as a coaching inn before its 2012 relaunch gives it a continuous trading history stretching back centuries, even though the current family ownership dates only from 2012.
