The Vaults occupies a former passageway to the coach houses behind Devizes town hall, converted into a micropub by Chaz Hobden and Malcolm Shipp, who opened it on 25 October 2013 after a search for an unconventional venue that began earlier that year. Hobden brews at Wessex Brewery and Shipp founded Stealth Brew Co, and the pair built the pub around a cellar beneath the building that runs more than twice the floor area of the bar itself. Known historically as the Town Hall Wine Vaults, the cellar holds a constant twelve degrees Celsius, giving real ale steady storage rather than chilled cabinets. The bar itself is small, in keeping with the micropub format, and pours a changing selection of cask and craft beer rather than one brewery's fixed range. It opens Thursday to Sunday, with no weekday trade.
