Yr Hen Lew Du occupies a building on Bridge Street thought to date from around 1700, trading for centuries as the Black Lion before the Welsh prefix Hen, meaning old, was added to separate it from the neighbouring Gogerddan Arms, which also once carried the Black Lion name. Licensees recorded through the nineteenth century include Elizabeth Davies in the 1820s and Henry Davies by 1835, and in the early 1800s the inn served as the departure point for the Princess of Wales stagecoach to Shrewsbury, travelling via Devil's Bridge and Newtown. The current family has owned and run the pub since 1986, serving Welsh dishes and real ale from the bar and offering letting rooms upstairs for overnight guests. It was named Bae Ceredigion Community Pub of the Year in 2016, and continues to publish its menus and signage bilingually in Welsh and English.
